Younger batteries think older solar is a cheap date

Or cheap rent / grid queue jumping? What does storage really want from Britain's solar farms?

First things first; this isn't yet the norm! But it's a recurrent conversation, like a couple long-term planning life's milestones; is it time to move in together yet, or whether it's time to "move closer to grandparents" (have kids!). 4 years' time is a long time in the life of Britain's grid connection queue, not incomparable to the wait for a good nursery/school place. And having connections/siblings in the existing catchment area might come in handy, hybrid (wind/solar plus battery) are being considered for queue jumping, even for completely new (as opposed to retrofit) battery projects.

Solar is a victim of its own success

More and more solar power depresses (cannibalises) the price it gets from straight selling the power it generates to the grid. I like to decompose this between the "within day" effect, and the broader seasonal effect of summer (being sunnier). British solar, including all the older RO projects (potentially on borrowed time on a PPA) have been spared the worst seen already on continental Europe, but since 2022 the "captured price" (the average weighted price solar can get) has started to fall consistently.
