Plug-in solar is a red herring
Plug-in batteries are going to revolutionise home energy
At Solar and Storage this week; the “up and coming” topic on everyone’s lips was plugin PV; announced to much fanfare and mainstream attention by Government, and as ministers are too keen to announce, coming soon to a Lidl near you.
As I posted about recently on LinkedIn, my experience of wall-mounted panels over 4 years has yielded about 500kwh/kw/year, about 75% the typical roof-top yield, with more of a volume penalty in the peak summer months.
More recently, I ran some payback numbers for a typical property in Birmingham, more typical of the national average1. 800W of PV2 get me to annual bill savings of £130-150 a year when backcast over the last 20 years. With a notional £500 price tag, then assuming no installation cost, homes could feasibly see payback in 3-4 years.
